Adams named in Socceroos squad for the first time

According to Australian outlets such as A Leagues.com.au and football360.com.au, Gamba Osaka midfielder Eli Adams has been named in the Socceroos squad for the first time under new head coach Tony Popovic. In his first squad since the World Cup, Popovic listed Adams among seven uncapped players in line for a potential debut, while longtime captain Mathew Ryan was a notable omission.

The Socceroos will play two friendlies against five-time world champions Brazil later this month: the first on Friday, September 25 at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville, and the second on Tuesday, September 29 at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. With the AFC Asian Cup coming up next January, Popovic reportedly sees the series as a chance to assess new faces.

A breakthrough in his first season abroad

Adams completed a permanent move from A-League side Newcastle Jets to Gamba Osaka this July, his first move overseas. Since joining the Jets in 2024, he made 52 appearances and scored 20 goals, and was named the A-League’s Young Player of the Year for 2025-26. He is also set to face his former club when Gamba visit Newcastle for their second ACL Elite league-stage match on October 13. Coming barely two months after his move to Japan, this maiden call-up suggests his form in the J1 League is boosting his standing back home as well.
